Launch tonight of ShopArt! in Westlegate which was great, upbeat and good
to see something bright and fresh and cheerful happening. Six shops in
Westlegate (just down from John Lewis), the Co-op in St Stephens, old
Blazers shop in Prince of Wales and more. Well done to the team have a
look at www. shopartnorwich.co.uk ...and keep an eye out for more art in
Norwich

This project is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government and money was given to Norwich City Council to spend it on brightening up city centre shops in the recession by encouraging artists to fill empty shops and shop windows. The Council commissioned Norwich Arts Centre to find artists, chat up landlords and shop owners and co-ordinate the whole project which they have done admirably well.

ShopArt! runs from now until March and there will be display changes along the way so make sure you watch out for brighter and artistic shop windows challenging theeffects of gthe recession in more ways than one.

Some basic facts

  • Norwich was one of the shortlisted cities bidding to be the 1st UK City of Culture in 2013
  • Derry/Londonderry was chosen out of a field which included Norwich, Sheffield and Birmingham by an independent panel of judges led by Phil Redmond
  • The Norwich bid was led by a bid team made up of representatives of the Council - the lead body, the City of Norwich Partnership and representatives of major cultural organisations in the city through consultation with a wider range of groups, advisors and individuals
  • Although Norwich didn't win, the bidding and consultation process will help to develop a 2020 cultural vision for the next 10 years in the city through a new cultural partnership for Norwich
  • The Norwich bid was supported by Stephen Fry, Amit Chaudhri, Miranda Raison, Richard Jordan, Marco Pierre White,more than 6000 Facebook supporters, the Evening News and EDP, the business community, dozens of arts organisations and thousands of people across the city, county and region
  • Norwich is already a city of culture!
